My ute! B20, Datsun 1000 Resto mod

Heres a few pics of my ute finally at the panel beaters after 4 yrs sitting in garage in primer! One thing I highly recommend if your going to get panel work done is make sure they don't shaft you! I had already had body done and as you can see by pics they bogged over everything! I'm just lucky a mate is doing it now and basically is remaking each side at back! Left is how it was right is nearly finished but now need tail lights to finish.
Really digging this build! whats the decision on the tailight?
This straighter lines look awesome in this second pic almost
seems like you are heading for a different flatter tailight?
hopefull in chrome?

I think maybe Mazda 1000.... What do you think? They are available brand new, with a few mods I think will be ok!

Update 1. Hey all, i guess im just excited, but It's always a good surprise to find no rust on a 1000 guard. Overall so far as rust goes body is very good, except the butchery on the back. Not looking forward to passenger side. There is a massive amount of work going into body I must give panel beater a pat on the back it's coming up fantastic! Hopefully another update Friday!
I would stay away from those lights they dont suit the angular hard lines of the 1000 like they do on the Mazda and also Mazda peeps will laugh that we are only left with their stock path our cars with.

I would seriously look at more gothic or period cathedral like versions there are two Chevy Nova ones that you can choose eg. Angular which you can add an indicator on the reverse clear section thats part of the bottom or use these rectangular ones but will need a small round separate indicator maybe unless you can use the Mustang style of flashing which turns the red on and off or these rectangular (2) ones which can be fitted with flashers then with all of them you just fit a chrome reverse wired spot light below the bumpers like on early 70s Honda Civics or these very cheap ones in LED chrome in the same way below the bumper or tucked under tailgate line

I suppose you could be right d, after all the taillights are the only thing they will see! Anyway going to keep searching but time is running out. More pics hopefully Friday, as the whole driver side is now done.
put cadillac style ones in i reckon they'd look sweet

The only thing I really want to be sure of is that I can get new. There is so many to look at I've seen a few caddy ones and looked ok. I'm going to wrecker to look at some rear ends to see what shapes are around, I'm sure I'm going to stack my car because all I do in traffic is look for some type of taillight! I don't mind gq patrol bumper tails just sure if chrome surround is available!
Hi all, I think d is right! After heaps of searching I am almost convinced the 67 nova tail lights are the go. I'm going to claim them as a datsun item! They do look very trick, hope to have them ASAP for install.
Nova lights they are sweet things! no one will pick them
as from another car they will look better than on a Nova!

....& easily avail those things where like US corollas

just remembered also vb10 wagons also used spot light
style rear reverse setup like early eb1 engined civics

Hi all, a few more pics, still on bloody driver side though! Found a bit of rust in sill which led to a bit more...awesome! Better to find it now I guess and repairs coming up good, panel beaters make it look so easy! I think there might also be an issue with nova tail light width as well, been told they are 120mm wide so might be back to searching! Damn they were nice! Anyway weekends here and so I can wear out my fingers searching the net.
I've got a pair of Escort Panelvan lamp assy's I planned on fitting to my old box trailer, that I could be coerced into selling...

If you're interested, I'll measure the length & width tonight.
When the "D" hits your eye, like a txt smiley guy...
Dats a real shame they are too wide

Be nice if you knew someone that could make flat custom Nova ones
that are more narrow and longer from laser cut or waterjet cut stainless
steel then cut your own plastic lenses behind them and get the panel
beaters to make the housing from stainless to suit compact LED bulbs

or some like these but wont fit also maybe HQ ones do?

Thanks Datsamore, it's funny you mention escort as I was considering. I actually have access to a set and will use as last resort. Thanks heaps for the offer.
If your bodyman is as good as you say
Not sure on the dimensions you have to work with
How about some Pontiac Firebird stye turned on their edge ?

Heres some getting done on an ugly car (UC SUnbird)

See this is why I love this site! Everyone thinking outside the box, giving me so much food for thought! I have about 200x75mm but there is a bit extra if I decide to run them under tailgate and blank out factory location. I'm not sure what year but f100's have a near perfect shape also. Decision's, decision's....
I was going to suggest a similar setup using thin led lights you can use in both amber and red
however something with chrome would be nice lasercut to look like a shorter version of these
cheap led trailer lights

however original looks so good too!

Finally driver side is done and in etch primer and starting to take shape. Now on to the passenger side back to metal. Not quite as bad as driver side but still average. The back corner was however alot worse! Decided to use commodore ute tailgate latch so back will be clean without factory one, with new gate release in centre inside tub. Still with light dilemma but still hoping for a factory set to fall in my lap. Colour is down to 3 possible so will let you know when it is down to 2 before I say! Anyway will get another update on Friday. Cheers

Hey all, a few more pics. I found some tail lights to use and I'm going to recess in almost flush. A lot of the rust repairs are done so now just have finish rear end, pas door and guard and then onto engine bay. Looking forward to seeing it put back together even in etch primer to get an idea of how it's going to look! I still can't decide on colour yet but these are the 3 I'm thinking, metallic pearl white(Lexus), Mazda 3or6 metallic red or some sort of silver metallic. What do you think? Anyway better get back to dreaming about driving it, cheers all.
